Dr. Sheila Brazel MD
Dr. Sheila Brazel is Past- Head of Ophthalmology at St. Joseph Health Centre in the west end of Toronto having served in that role for 13 years. As head of the department, she oversaw the growth of a team of multi-disciplinary ophthalmic specialists and the development of a highly respected state-of-the art teaching clinic and operating facility. She has been on staff at St. Joseph's as a cataract and glaucoma surgeon since 1996 and has performed over 20,000 surgeries.
She is a lecturer in the University of Toronto in the Department of Vision Sciences and is involved in teaching clinical ophthalmology to both family practice residents and undergraduate medical students. Dr. Brazel founded ‘West Toronto Eye Care’ in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood in 2010. It became a mainstay of high quality, community based, sub-specialized eye care in the west end of Toronto for well over a decade.
Dr. Brazel began her studies as an undergraduate at the University of Waterloo. She completed medical school and ophthalmology residency training at the University of Toronto. Her postgraduate training included the completion of a Fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Additional postgraduate fellowship training in glaucoma was completed at The University Health Network. Committed to lifelong learning, Dr. Brazel is published in medical journals and attends international conferences on new advances in the latest ophthalmic medical and surgical techniques.
She is an active member of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, The Canadian Glaucoma Society, The Canadian Medical Association, and The American Academy of Ophthalmology.
