Dr. Dara Onasanya OD FAAO, Dipl. ABO
Cataract & Retina Surgeon
Dr. Dara Onasanya is an ophthalmologist with fellowship training in medical retina. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Manitoba, followed by a medical retina fellowship at Queen’s University. He earned his MD and his BSc with Great Distinction in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Saskatchewan.

His scholarly work spans both ophthalmology and interdisciplinary research. He co-authored a peer-reviewed study on sutureless scleral-fixated posterior chamber IOLs in Seminars in Ophthalmology, and has additional publications in Medicine, Science and the Law and Current Atherosclerosis Reports. He has presented research on post-intravitreal injection endophthalmitis at national and university forums.
Dr. Onasanya’s contributions have been recognized by the Canadian Ophthalmological Society Award for Excellence in Ophthalmic Research, University of Manitoba Department of Ophthalmology Research Day awards, the PJICI Community Leader Excellency Award, and two Dean’s Summer Research Project Awards from the University of Saskatchewan.
Beyond clinical care, Dr. Onasanya is active in mentorship and leadership. He served as Vice President of Black Residents of Canada, contributed to the Royal College Accreditation Working Group for Anti-Black Racism, and mentors learners through the Canadian Ophthalmology Mentorship Program.
In his spare time, he enjoys fitness, music, and community volunteering.
