    What Are Cataracts?

    A cataract is a common age-related condition in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. The lens normally works with the cornea to focus light onto the retina, allowing you to see clearly at different distances. Over time, proteins in the lens can break down and clump together, creating cloudy areas that affect vision.

    Cataracts typically develop gradually and may cause symptoms such as blurred or cloudy vision, increased sensitivity to light, glare or halos around lights, faded colours, reduced night vision, or frequent changes in glasses prescriptions.

    In the early stages, vision changes may be managed with updated glasses or improved lighting. When cataracts begin to interfere with daily activities such as reading or driving, surgery may be considered.

    What Is Cataract Surgery?

    Cataract surgery is a common outpatient procedure in which an ophthalmologist removes the clouded natural lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure typically takes less than 15 minutes per eye.

    In Ontario, standard cataract surgery and a basic monofocal lens are covered by OHIP. Optional advanced diagnostic technologies and premium lens options are available but are not covered by OHIP.
